about frances
Frances McGowin is a contemporary abstract artist based in Fairhope, Alabama, known for expressive paintings filled with movement, texture, and emotion. Her work explores the connection between color, intuition, and storytelling, creating pieces that are meant to be felt as much as viewed.
Driven by a constant desire to experiment, Frances works across acrylic, mixed media, collage, and layered abstraction. Her collections range from bold floral compositions and modern still life paintings to large expressive abstracts inspired by everyday moments, memories, and energy.
Her studio practice is deeply process-oriented. Each painting evolves organically through layers of mark-making, color exploration, and spontaneous composition. No two works are alike, yet each carries a distinct sense of warmth, movement, and personality.
Working from her Fairhope studio, Frances creates paintings in a variety of scales — from small framed studies to large statement canvases designed to transform interior spaces. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and art spaces throughout Alabama, including Hello Gallery in Fairhope, Sophiella Gallery in Mobile, Stonehenge Gallery in Montgomery, and the Eastern Shore Art Center.
Frances believes that art should create connection, spark emotion, and bring life into a room. Every piece is an invitation to pause, reflect, and experience color in a personal way.
Artist Statement
“Every work of art is experimental.
Every work of art is an evolution of the one before.
Every piece expresses a story to be felt, not judged.”
